120907-N-JU810-050 AVONDALE, La. (Sept. 7, 2012) Huntington Ingalls Shipbuilding metal workers weld a box to the mast of landing transport dock ship Anchorage (LPD 23) which contains the ship’s coins during a mast stepping ceremony with ship sponsor Annette Conway. The mast stepping ceremony is a shipbuilding tradition that dates back to ancient Rome. During the ceremony, coins and other affections are placed into the mast prior to it being secured in place. The coins are meant to bring the ship luck as well as to “pay the crew’s way” in the event the ship sinks. Conway is wife of Gen. James T. Conway, USMC(Ret.), 34th Commandant of the Marine Corps.
