120907-N-JU810-125 AVONDALE, La. (Sept. 7, 2012) Annette Conway, sponsor for landing transport dock ship Anchorage (LPD 23), sits in the captain’s chair in the pilot house on board Anchorage during a tour of the ship. Conway visited Anchorage, currently under construction at the Huntington Ingalls Industries Shipbuilding site in Avondale, to take part in a mast stepping ceremony, a shipbuilding tradition that dates back to ancient Rome. During the ceremony, coins and other affections are placed into the mast prior to it being secured in place. The coins are meant to bring the ship luck as well as to “pay the crew’s way” in the event the ship sinks. Conway is wife of Gen. James T. Conway, USMC(Ret.), 34th Commandant of the Marine Corps.
